Should You Ban AI on Fridays?

It sounds like a joke:

“Maybe we should ban AI on Friday afternoons.”

But the more you think about it, the more sense it makes.

By Friday, most people are running on fumes. The week has been busy, deadlines are approaching, and attention to detail may not be at its sharpest.

Now add AI into the mix.

Tools such as Microsoft Copilot can draft emails, summarise documents and generate responses in seconds. That is incredibly useful, but it also introduces a subtle risk.

The output often looks polished and ready to send. When you are tired or rushing, it is easy to trust it without giving it a proper review.

That is when small mistakes creep in: an email that sounds slightly off, a response with the wrong tone, or something that is technically correct but inappropriate for the situation.

There is also a wider risk. The more we rely on AI to think for us, the less likely we are to challenge what it produces. Instead of asking, “Is this right?”, the default can become, “That looks fine.”

Over time, that can weaken critical thinking and change how decisions are made across a team.

So perhaps “no AI on Fridays” is not such a ridiculous idea.

You do not need to switch AI off, but you should build sensible habits around it.

Encourage your team to review anything generated by AI before it is shared externally, particularly emails, customer responses and anything representing your business. Check the tone as carefully as the facts.

It is also worth creating clear guidelines around when AI should be used and how its output should be handled.

AI is a powerful assistant, but it still needs a human in the loop.

Especially at 4:30pm on a Friday.
