Beware of Fake Windows 11 Updates

You probably don’t think twice when you see a Windows update. A quick click, a short wait, and the job is done.

That trust is exactly what cybercriminals are exploiting.

A fake Windows 11 update is being used to trick people into downloading malware. The page is designed to look like an official Microsoft support site, using familiar layouts, branding and language.

At a glance, there may be nothing obvious to suggest it is fake. It presents what appears to be a normal Windows 11 update and invites you to download it.

But clicking the button does not install an update. It installs malware.

What makes this scam more convincing is that the file has been created using legitimate development tools and packaged to appear genuine. It may contain familiar labels and file properties that suggest it has come from Microsoft.

Fake updates used to be easier to spot. Poor design, unusual wording or obvious mistakes often gave them away. Modern scams are much more polished and are designed to blend into familiar routines.

How to stay safe

The safest place to manage Windows 11 updates is through the built-in Settings app under Windows Update.

Avoid downloading updates from unexpected emails, pop-ups or unfamiliar websites. If you need to download something manually, go directly to Microsoft’s official website.

A simple rule for your team is:

If an unexpected message asks you to install an update, stop and check it first.

The more normal something looks, the less likely people are to question it - and attackers are relying on that.
